This explains in simple terms the trending behind some of my work and why I have chosen cats as a subject. I like to feel that I am part of this subculture and would like others to understand. The internet chose cats, for a few reasons and this site explains why. This has been a useful piece of research as it allows someone looking in at my project as a spectator some understanding of quite a strange notion.

Nyan Cat has played a key role in my research, He is a figure of the internet that people recognise, It is like a symbol for the internet trending meme society. Know your meme, try to explain current trends on the internet when they happen and they keep graphs and statistics on trending. This is useful if I decide to look into trends and trying to keep very up to date with my work.

Beech, D., (2006) 'Jake and Dinos Chapman - Bad Art for Bad People',  Shock: A report On contemporary Culture. London: Tate Publishing.

This book has been a key point in my mind, I find it disgusting, yet interesting at the same time. It stays in my mind as something I absolutely want to avoid in my own artwork. I admire their boldness but I am highlighting this as a way of knowing what I do not want, in a hope I will discover what I'm actually looking for.

Boot, M,. (2002) Grayson Perry - Guerrilla Tactics 'Simple Ceramic pots'. Amsterdam: Uitgever.

Grayson Perry is a huge inspiration to me, I'm interested in his style of illustration and how he transforms his simple pots into political and emotional art with his use of imagery and illustration. This has been a good source because it has allowed me an insight into a more contextual side of his artwork, rather than personal stories about the artist himself.

With this source it helps to form a basic understanding of what ‘cuteness’ might be and offers an insight into what the Japanese aesthetic of Kawaii. They also look into how the principles of cuteness and Kawaii can be applied in a practical sense, to help sell products. Within this source there is also information from primary research that they have undertaken, examining what is perceived as cute, such as ratio of head size to body, which colour hues are considered to be the cutest, and what type of shapes conform to the cute ideal. This has helped me to form a basic understanding on the concepts of cuteness and how it can be applied to real life situations. I feel however I need to research deeper to find a source that offers me more of an explanation of why cuteness is popular, and how I can apply this.

Gemma Correll has been a huge inspiration and key figure in my mind throughout these projects. I enjoy her easy style and her tactful and sensible sense of humor and the way she publishes her work online, hoping to sell merchandise rather than actual art.

This research paper was brilliant, It is light-hearted to match the subject matter, which is something that I am aiming for. I dislike all the pretention and over formality in traditional academic papers, this is different however. He keeps to his point and explains and then explores each subject matter. He is explaining things that are almost in another language and it helps the reader to understand more about the internet and its usage. With a reference to Lolcats I can has cheezburger in its title, it is clear and to the point. I am unsure as to if this is suitable in a academic sense, but I feel it was extremely current and needed for this piece of work.

Heller, S. And Arismam, A. (ed). (2000) The education of an illustrator. New York: Allworth Press.

This is a key text for my studies, this has been my guide to the world of illustration, it starts by explaining how to find your own style, which has been a crucial element for my experimental practice. It has helped me to let go of my insecurities over my drawing ability and to accept it as a style. This book also examines the use of computers and the internet with respect to how illustration has changed with the introduction of technology.

Jones, W,. (2006) Grayson Perry - Portrait of the artist as a young girl. London: Chatto & Windus

I really admire Grayson Perry and I found this story of his youth, and the invention of his bear, Alan Measles. The reader is drawn into his personal childhood world where this super hero character of a bear is created. This bear is a symbol of childhood and could reference back into my work if I choose to create some child like images.

Key has introduced me to some interesting points about illustration that I wouldn't have thought about before. He examines the use of lines and how they can portray emotion and personality with the way in which they are formed. He also established my interest in illustration as a form of art and not just for practical reasons. With this book being written in 1900, its language was outdated and expressed old outdated views, some of which are still the same, some that have changed. It is a very emotive text and brings interest to the art of drawing lines.

Kuwahara, M., (2005) Tattoo: An Anthropology. Oxford: Berg.

This was an interesting and suitable read, I needed to expand my knowledge of tattoo culture and origins. This book explains traditional methods of tattooing and the differences between cultural designs. It taught me some useful ideas to consider when I am designing tattoos, such as the Polynesian style of working with negative space. I would have like to have seen some tattoos designed on paper, rather than on the skin, but it was a useful insight into the possibilities of tattooing.

This source I did not use within my text, but feel it explores an element of Asian culture that I wished to learn more about in order to make my writing more informed. It examines the identity of an apparently well-known Asian artist Murakami and how his work relates to both eastern and western art principles. It looks at how artists can branch between the cultures and how mega brands, such as Hello Kitty are able to pass through cultural barriers and become internationally popular. I feel that this source is going in the right direction but it lacks information on the idea of the cute aesthetic in any detail.

This source looks at the issues such as globalisation and the affects on all cultures. It suggests a view point that I had not considered that each society is mutually implicative of each other. I feel that it is very important for me to continue reading sources like this that examine the cultural implications of my proposed project. As with this information it will help me to make a well informed project.  I feel I need to be aware of transcultural works, but need to find a more specific example that is not looking at fashion aspects. I also had the theory of the male gaze and sexualisation forced upon me while reading this source, suggesting that cuteness and its origins are stemmed from sexuality, such as a child like existence, and with that being perverted.

This has been useful for the kawaii culture mixed with the tattoo culture that it contains. I needed to see the two elements that I was working with, tattoo and cuteness, merged as one and to view them as a couple that work well together. I have not taken this idea any further at this point in the, but I will be revisiting this so spark some ideas for my tattoo designing freelance work.

This book has some concise information on illustration, and features mainly on digital art and how digital is a trend. It shows examples of artists work, and expresses opinions such as 'computers are worthless' which I agree with. I feel this book was suitable for me to read because it gave me information on a field that I was not familiar with. I would have liked to have seen some walkthroughs and more how to's, if it was actually going to expose secrets.
